Visit California and ski industry applaud Caltrans snow removal efforts to keep resort areas open for business

Visit California and the state’s ski industry commended the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) at a recent Snow Summit for its proactive snow removal plan to keep major resort roads open for the 2011-12 snow season, which launched this weekend with the first major snowfall in the High Sierra region, announced Caroline Beteta, Visit California president & CEO.

“We’re very excited by this first snowfall, which will be a much-needed boon to the state economy,” Beteta said. “In 2010, there were approximately 7.6 million visits* to California’s major resorts from Mount Shasta in the north to Big Bear Lake in Southern California. That couldn’t have happened without the ingenuity and hard work of Caltrans. With very few exceptions, they managed to keep the roads clear for travelers despite being burdened last year with no signed state budget and no way to purchase materials or hire additional seasonal snow removal equipment operators.
